The Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights

" A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,
the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed "

The following comments are mine exclusively and have not been officially endorsed by the National Rifle Association.

The next four years will present lawful and legitimate owners of firearms with some very serious issues.  The President-elect has a documented anti-gun record while serving in the Illinois Senate and there is no reason to believe that his anti-gun beliefs will not follow him to the White House.

In the June 2008, a monumental case was heard by the Supreme Court of the United States and it was decided by a 5 to 4 decision that the Second Amendment is to be interpreted as an individual right.  This was the very first time that the Supreme Court was tasked to deliberate the true meaning of the Second Amendment.  Now for the bad news: As many as three justices may retire in the next four years and the President-elect will surely nominate a judge(s) who, among other things, has the same anti-gun leanings as he does.  This same type of case as decided in the summer of 2008 (Is the Second Amendment an individual right?) will again reappear and the outcome has an excellent chance of being totally different than the first challenge.

Each Amendment contained in the Bill of Rights has equal importance.  Each and every one.  It is up to us to ensure that all Amendments are equally protected.  If we loose one we loose them all.

May 2009 update:  Current Supreme Court Judge David Souter has announced he will retire at the end of June 2009. ????
