Spalted alder, spalted alder, amboyna burl, ambrosia maple, birdseye maple, desert ironwood, honey locust, candy cane boxelder, buckeye burl, ziricote, carob, cherry burl, chittum burl, chinaberry and cross-cut red palm. Please note that some of the woods pictured above are no longer available from us.

"Beautiful wood doesn't grow on trees - you have to go out and find it!"

Buying wood sight unseen is like driving a car with your eyes closed - you never know what you are going to get - or hit.  We would like to take the uncertainty out of your "blind" wood purchase. We work very hard to locate and offer exceptional wood, some of which is not seen in the 'big' catalogs.  We call it "Eye Candy".  We offer fair pricing and personal service to ensure that the blanks you receive are just what you were looking for.  We hand select each blank to ensure it meets our standards.  If you aren't happy we're not happy - it's as simple as that.

If we have not had the opportunity to serve you and you are tired of receiving less than satisfactory wood please take a moment to visit our Customer Comments page and read what some of our customers have said about us.  We want to make your shopping experience with us as enjoyable and easy as possible.  You can be assured that your order will be handled in a professional manner and delivered promptly.

Blank Sizes

Most of the wood we buy is bought whole and not pre-cut.  Buying large burls and lumber allows us to inspect and cut the wood to its best advantage.  We also crosscut wood and the resulting blanks are totally different that what you might expect.

Unless otherwise noted our standard size pen blank measures 3/4 x 3/4" x 5 to 5 1/4" long .  Our oversize blanks measure a minimum 13/16" x 13/16" x 5 1/4 to 5 1/2" long.  The oversize blanks allow you a little more leeway when drilling and making the larger Berea Hardwoods El Grande pens and the Craft Supplies USA Gentlemen's pens.  We now offer a limited selection of smaller 5/8" x 5/8" x 5" long blanks for the medium and smaller pens (less waste).

Stabilization

We are frequently asked why I have wood stabilized - even when it doesn't 'need' it.  Some woods actually need processing in order to be turned and finished properly (punky spalts, soft buckeye burl, etc.).  Processing will transform these soft woods and make them harder than woodpecker lips.  There are other woods that don't need to be stabilized but the process brings out (or 'pops') the color and/or figure of the wood.  Either case, stabilized blanks will finish much easier and to a higher luster, the wood is impervious to moisture, and the wood will retain its beauty much longer.  These factors, in our opinion, far outweigh the higher cost of a stabilized blank compared with an unprocessed blank.  We offer many different species of wood that have been professionally stabilized by companies that specialize in this type of process.  No 'home brews' are used to process our wood.

Color Stabilization

Some wood lends itself to be color stabilized.  Boxelder burl and maple burl are two species that take color really well.  Wood density plays a big part and varied patters can result resulting in one-of-a-kind blanks.  We also have limited amounts of boxelder burl that has been double-dyed and they, too, produce one-of-a-kind pens.

All of these pens were made by Bill Baumbeck

Left to right: boxelder burl (BEB) blue, BEB brown, BEB green, BEB gold, BEB red, BEB violet, maple burl blue, maple burl brown, curly maple (CM) blue, CM brown, CM green, CM gold, CM red, CM green and CM violet.

"A picture is worth a thousand words"

Some of you may not know what some of these woods look like.  A friend of mine has compiled a  gallery of pictures illustrating most of the pen blanks that I offer.    To view pictures of the various pen blanks click on the species name or go to Pen Blank Images.  Please note that all blanks are not pictured and some are no longer available.  Additional photos will be displayed as new woods become available and when I have enough time to take them.

Natural Wood Blanks

We carry a selection of wood blanks that are not processed.  Some of these woods are not candidates for processing because of the wood's oiliness, density, etc.  Examples are cocobolo, mahogany and desert ironwood (not to be confused with desert ironwood sapwood). These natural blanks are listed in the Non-Stabilized Pen Blank Price List .

Stabilized Pen Blank Price List

The pen blanks are now a part of our shopping cart!

Good wood is hard to find and it's availability changes constantly.  We will only sell what we consider the best wood that is reasonably available.  There will be times when we run out of some of the pen blanks listed below.  Good wood doesn't grow on trees - we have to go out and find it.  We are always looking for premium wood in order to provide you with the 'eye candy' you have come to expect from us.  We apologize if a particular species and/or color is out of stock.  Please be aware that we are trying our best to resupply what ever it is that you are looking for.

My personal opinion...

I am a forty-two year resident of Yuma, Arizona.  My home town is located on the Arizona/California/Mexico border along side the Colorado River. Our country has been invaded over the past 25 years and I am no longer willing to keep my head down and not say anything for fear of offending someone.  If my personal beliefs effect my business - I'm willing to live with that.  If I have offended someone - I'm willing to live with that too.

I have lived in this great country for over 60 years and I am not going to back down from any threat directed at the United States from any threat - foreign or domestic.  As Davy Crockett may have said: "Bring em' on!" (although I think the words may have been stated it in much stronger language).  If you would like to see for yourself what this country is up against take a look at this website mexica-movement .

If you would like to help out Arizona please consider donating to our state's legal defense fund by clicking on the link below.  This is not just an Arizona problem - illegal immigration affects all of us.  Should you believe as I do and want to help out then put your money where your mouth is.  70% of us living in Arizona approve of SB1070 and we certainly appreciate your support.  Someday we might be able to financially support your state in accomplishing the same legislation Arizona passed.

$5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 donations are most welcome.  Thank you for your consideration.

Update July 29, 2010   We are not giving up!

What is a Veteran?   A "Veteran" -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of up to and including his or her life.

We will work to "keep America strong, keep America prosperous, and keep America free," said North upon the founding of Freedom Alliance. And so we have.

It was 113 here yesterday....

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.  He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.  When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?''  This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.. 'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.  'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'  The man gestured, and the gate began to open.  'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.  'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.  As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.  'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'  'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.' 'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog. 'There should be a bowl by the pump.'  They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.  The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.  'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.  'This is Heaven,' he answered. 'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.' 'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's Hell.'  'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?' 'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Author unknown but I've been told that this story was presented in an episode of Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone".
