Next Generation Pen Maker!!

One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching pen making is when young people want to learn how to make a pen.  Last weekend in New England, I had the pleasure of working with a very nice young lady, Danielle, who wanted to start her own pen making business.  Her father was 100% behind her idea (that is who took the picture) and this is Danielle’s first pen!
Her dad was the investor who made sure she had all the tools to properly, and safely, make her pens.
Just think about what a young person, or anyone, can do with a micro business like this.
The start-up costs are fairly small. An ambitious person could pay off the equipment, and start turning a profit, within a couple of months. Students can let their friends and family know about their business in person, and all of their social media friends can follow along when they post photos of their pens for sale. It’s a great opportunity for a young person to own their own business, have flexible time, and make more than just working in a fast food place.
And they would certainly have their teacher’s gifts covered!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, From Our Family to Yours!

Happy New Year from Cole, Lenora, Barry & Michael

Happy New Year from Cole, Lenora, Barry & Michael

We want to wish all of our friends and customers a VERY Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year for 2016!

We’ve been working like crazy to get our booth, supplies & products ready for the show season. Lots of late nights in the shop & warehouse, including last night, New Year’s Eve. The freight company comes on Monday to get the massive boxes that contain our booth, and it all has to be packaged up by then. We think we’re ready, but then we always think that, even if it isn’t true. This includes the fiasco last year when I forgot my demonstration kit, including all my tools and sample pieces. I usually follow Santa’s rule of thumb – make a list, and check it twice, but stuff still happens. Anyway, we’re looking forward to seeing everyone who shows up at the shows this year. The first show is next weekend in Baltimore:
January 8, 9 & 10, 2016 – Baltimore – Maryland State Fair Grounds -Cow Palace, Timonium, MD
The Woodworking Shows – January thru April 2016

The complete schedule for 2016 is here:  The Woodworking Shows Schedule 2016

Universal Set of Barrel Trimming Sleeves

It has been a long time in the making, but it is finally here!

Read to the bottom for our Limited Time, Introductory Offer.

A universal set of barrel trimming sleeves that will work with either a standard 7mm barrel trimmer, or a squaring jig.  This set of nine (9) individual sleeves will work on 99.9% of all pen kits currently on the market.

Using these sleeves will make it easier to square up your pen blanks rather than trying to make your own sleeves for all the different pen kits on the market today.

Every time I did a demo at shows, people would come up to me and ask why no one made a complete set of trimming sleeves. After hearing this all the time, I thought “Why don’t I make them?”. Since this was a pretty big project to tackle, I partnered with my friends at Penn State Industries to develop the set, manufacture it, and bring it to market.

The Universal Barrel Trimming Sleeve set is also available in 2 combination sets:

Pen Turners Workbook Vol 3 in Korean!

Now Available in Korean

Now Available in Korean

David Duk-Su purchased the Pen Turner’s Workbook from a book store, and thought it would be a good book to translate in Korean.
He approached me over a year ago, right after the third edition was published, and we started to work on the translation. David thought this would be a good book to translate into Korean since the popularity of pen making is rising, and you don’t need a lot of space to make pens. David approached a Korean publisher, and to his astonishment, he found out that no woodworking book has EVER been translated from English to Korean! There are Korean woodworking books, but this is the first woodworking book of any kind to be translated into Korean. Obviously, my Korean is a tad rusty, so I had to rely on David to do ALL the work. It took well over a year. We went back and forth on certain phrases because English does not directly translate in Korean easily. Now it has been published in Korean, and I am proud of the work David did to accomplish it – my many thanks to him!

Now, if I can only get him to send me over there for a free book tour!

Atlantic Shore Woodturners Meeting & Answers To Your Casting Questions

Atlantic Shore Woodturners Meeting

Atlantic Shore Woodturners Meeting

Thank you to the  Atlantic Shore Woodturners for having me at your meeting last evening.  This was the third time in the past 12 days that I demonstrated for a group on making clear casted pen blanks .

Some of the same questions keep coming up, and I thought I would share them with everyone:

Is there a kit that has everything in it to make clear pen blanks?
Yes,  the Pen Blank Casting Kit from Arizona Silhouette.

What pen kit should I use?
I suggest using a larger pen tube kit such as a Sierra, Sierra Vista, Gatsby, Wall Street II of Wall Street III. They all use a 27/64″ pen tube which will give you a larger surface area to use.

What type of paint do I use to paint the tubes?
Any acrylic paint from your local hobby store will work.  Just make sure that you rough up the pen tubes first.

Do I need a pressure pot or vacuum chamber to cast polyester pen blanks?
No, if you are using polyester resin, you do not need vacuum or pressure to cast your blanks.  If you are using Alumilite then yes, you definitely *will* need a pressure pot, you do not need to deal with all the bubbles that form with Alumilite.

Why don’t I need a pressure pot?
The reason you do not need a pressure pot is that you are pouring the resin in 3 separate pours so if any bubbles do form they will come to the surface by themselves and break open into the air.  If you try and pour it all at once, then you run the risk of getting air trapped in your pour and ruining your pen blank.

What type of printer and paper do I need to make a picture or logo pen?
I use regular ink jet paper with an ink jet printer.  Photo paper is too thick, and will not wrap around the pen tube properly.  I paint the pen tube with white paint to make the photo brighter as well. Also, DO NOT use a laser jet  printer.  The laser jet ink will “float” off because the resin will attack the ink – so only use an ink jet printer!

Why don’t you see “lines” on the finished pen since you are pouring three separate times?
Good Question!  I am not a chemist, all I can say is that I have made thousands of pens using this method and NOT ONCE have I seen a pour line after it has been wet sanded and polished the pen blank.  So relax and enjoy your own creation!

“It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over” – A Lesson in Patience

Yogi Berra said it best…“It Ain’t Over ’til It’s Over”
Empty booth at

Empty booth at last weekend’s show

This past weekend I attended the American Art Marketing – Wadsworth Museum Show in Connecticut.  This was the first year for this craft show, so I expected the attendance to be low, and it was very light in attendance. Most of the exhibitors around me had light sales, and some of the exhibitors did not even make their booth fee and expenses! Luckily, I had made my booth fee and expenses, with a slight profit.

The show was over at 5 PM on Sunday, and so at 4 PM, since traffic was light, I started to put some of my pens away. Just as I was starting to pack up, 3 different customers came into the booth. Those three customers purchased nine of my higher priced pens and took my so-so weekend to a **WOW** weekend, just like that!
So, the moral of the story is never give up until the final second of a show – you never know who will show up and make your day!
BTW, we are taking orders for the lever action pens, (which did very well at the show – sold all of them that I had (6). Please call us, and we will take your name and order and when they come in we will ship them to you!
Barry’s Tip:
When I sell a higher priced pen at a show, I make sure that it has fresh ink in the pen. This has come to light because a customer called, and complained that his pens were running out of ink fast.  When we researched this we found that they had purchased the pen kits over two years ago and they were putting the old ink into the pens and selling them.  If I have a pen that has not sold in a while, I always put a fresh refill into the pen.  In a pinch, if I am out of town at a show, I will go to Office Max, Staples or any other stationary store and get some fresh refills to put into my pens.  This is the least expense part of the pen but if it does not write properly it will cost you  a sale!
Good selling – Barry

Stabilization Chamber & Cactus Juice

Stabilization Chamber & Cactus Juice

This coming Monday, April 20, 2015  Barry will be at the Bucks Woodturners meeting to explain his wood stabilization chamber – the one that uses Cactus Juice!

Cactus “juice” is a professional grade heat cured resin for stabilizing and hardening wood and other porous material. It is especially effective on beautiful, punky, or spalted woods that would otherwise be too soft to work with.

Barry’s also going to demonstrate making a bangle bracelet with a seamless metal core.

Bucks Woodturners meetings begin at 7:30 PM in the woodworking studio in the Hicks Art Center building of the Bucks County Community College, Swamp Road, Newtown, PA.

Pen Making Demonstration at DelVal Woodturners in NJ

Barry demonstrating at DelVal Woodturners Group

Barry demonstrating at DelVal Woodturners Group

I want to thank everyone who attended the Pen Making Demonstration at Del Val Woodturners meeting the other night in Moorestown, NJ.

The meeting was very well attended. There were many questions from the audience ranging from tool selection to finishing techniques.

There was even an unanticipated “bonus” demonstration. I had to repair the Spalted maple pen blank that I was turning because a piece “blew” off! (I know, you didn’t think this happened to professionals) Once it was repaired, no one could tell where the piece blew out. It was a good lesson on repairing a blow out. Learning little tips like this is a great way to save frustration, time & money.

Thank you for hosting me, I had a great time!
